From veranda post to carved box

Post by Coogara »

Six years ago I had to replace a couple of veranda posts. Turned out they were Oregon so I put them aside for future use.

Just got around to using them recently. I've turned several boxes on the lathe, leaving enough material on the lid to make some carvings.

To mount them on the CNC, I cut a hole in a piece of MDF with a hole saw and jammed them in with a suitable amount of paper towel wrapped around them for a tight fit, then secured the MDF to the spoil board. I also wrapped the upper portion of the lid with painter's tape, hoping to minimise tearout when the bit passed the edges. The carving was done with an engraving bit. All told, about 5 hours cutting.

+1 to what Michael said!
Most people would have just tossed or burned.
Instead you're getting multiple boxes out of them :)
Congrats Graeme!!

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

Really nice work. Have just started to learn to turn and am inspired by the piece you offer here.

Thanks. I like the idea of combining turning, or other woodworking practices, with CNC carving.
