Shaper tooling on a cnc

Post by rscrawford »

Does anyone have any good information on using shaper tooling on a CNC? My shaper has a 3hp spindle, and my cnc has a 10hp spindle (not sure the HP is compatible). I watch industrial videos that show large shaper tooling being used on a CNC to cut door and window profiles in a single pass, but finding arbors is not an easy thing, which leads me to believe this isn't very common? I did find one place that sells ISO30 arbors (integrated) and HSK arbors (integrated), which would be very handy and solid.

I am mostly interested in a helix insert cutterhead, 50-80mm length, for profile cutting in a single pass (workpiece held off table on pods.

Any reason that these aren't commonly used with a CNC spindle?

A few months ago, when I doing my pool table, I purchased a 4" diamond grinder, then I made my own shaft on the lathe.

I think you have a good idea, and here's a link to Amanda tools with the size you have in mind:

I think if you had the shaft machined to fit the cutter and also fit in your largest collet, it might work for what you're thinking. Anybody with a lathe could make the shaft.

You're brave grinding concrete! I'd be afraid of that abrasive dust getting into my bearings on the linear rails or the spindle!

They make arbors that have an ISO30 cone on the one end, so it fits right in the tool changer. I think that would give the least runout, least vibration, etc. But I never see people using these cutters except in Industrial videos and I'm wondering why?! I definitely don't want to wreck my $7500 spindle.

I realize they are meant for slower rpm that the typical spindle runs, but with a 10hp spindle running at 5000rpm, I should be fine I would think? I know I lose some power slowing down to 5000rpm.

What you are seeing is often custom made tooling. Usually HSK shanked tool bodies.
In 20+ years, I've never seen a CNC spindle arbor for shaper cutters, but have seen lots of big, custom tooling.

I kind of suspected custom tooling. Too expensive for me, but sure would be nice to have something in a larger diameter (like a 80mm diameter) for smoother profile cuts like I get with my shaper.

Need to find a Leitz dealer. That has promise, though it doesn't have much advantage over a 3/4" solid carbide spiral bit.
