Quilt clamp help

Post by Beltramidave »

I am trying to make a compression clamp for a quilt hanger similar to the attached picture. The finished part is going to be 1.5" wide x 2.5" tall x .72" thick. I have modeled up the clamp on edge the way I would like it to be, but I want to machine it flat from .75" stock using 2 sided machining.

I cannot figure out how to do this. I am attaching the file if anyone can help me. Thanks.

Not to be a wise guy but I would use a band saw.

From what I can see in that pic you have a concave side and a convex side.

Machine the concave side first then flip it over and do the convex side.

Just use a stop strip to locate it when you flip it over.

Other than that, I am not sure what has you stumped?

By the way, that is not a real good design in that picture. The grain is running the wrong way. Grain on clamps like that should run 90 degrees to what is shown. Much less prone to splitting.

Use a 2 rail sweep using the top and bottom horizontal lines. Flip it over and do the same on the other side (inverse). This example is not drawn to your dimensions.

Thank you for the suggestions. I don't have a bandsaw. Good point on the grain direction too, though there shouldn't be a lot of pressure on these.

I like the two rail sweep idea the best, so far, but is there a way to get the radius on the ends?

To get radii on the ends modify the cross section vectors to include the desired radii.
