font question
I have found a font I would like to use, it is OTF, will this work in vcarve pro or does it have to be TTF?

Re: font question
The Documentation says TTF fonts. The Text input menu gives a choice of TrueType or Single Line fonts.
However, I did a test and downloaded a free OTF font (AeroliteCPone_Medium.otf) and it seems to work fine in VCP 9
I had the TrueType radio button highlighted and chose the OTF font anyway. It didn't have any problem.
Be aware though...some OTF fonts have special characters and glyphs, etc. I do NOT know if those would work in the software or not.

Re: font question
Here is a quote from http://www.reviversoft.com/file-extensions/otf
"The .otf file extension is used as an OpenType Font file wherein this font type was developed by Adobe and Microsoft. It is a combination of font formats such as TrueType and Postscripts. Aside from being a font type file, the .otf file extension is also used as a template file that’s used by OpenOffice spreadsheets for formula creation."
Another source said that TTF is an older font type and that .otf is newer and arguably better. One of the differences is that OTF uses glyphs along with CCF (Compact Font Format) tables. It states that CCF uses cubic Bezier splines vs. TTF using quadratic Bezier splines. Would that make a difference when we convert a letter to a vector? Would the newer font format give vectors that better describe the letter form?
Also since Michael was able to import and use a .otf has Vectric already built in support for .otf fonts? Maybe we are looking at a feature upgrade that could be incorporated into future versions of the software.

Re: font question
I am new to CNC and Vcarve, I have read that TTF is the only type font that will work within Vcarve. thus the reason for my original question. There is a site that someone told me about that you can get free fonts and several I looked at said OTF. I also think you can buy them from Etsy, however I think the particular fondness I am wanting is also OTF on Etsy as well. I have also looked through the tutorials and have not seen anything about this, hopefully someone has a confirmation that OTF will work for sure.
I really appreciate everyones input and help

Do any of your OTF fonts have ligatures, glyphs or other special alternate or decorative text characters? And, if so, do they show up when used in your Vectric software?

Re: font question
OTF fonts will display with an O in the left hand column of the font list whereas TrueType will display as TT. I have several OTF fonts that I use constantly and I've never had an issue with them. Not all of them have full character sets but the same is true for many true type fonts as well. Not all developers bother with the full range of accents etc.

Re: font question
This might help people understand better than i can explain
https://www.fonts.com/support/faq/font-formats
I probably have more PS & OT fonts installed on my computer (windows 10) that I do TTFs, working as a signmaker for lots of years where most Designers & Printers used Adobe software & Mac machines.
As Adrian has said Opentype fonts will display with an "o" to the left & true type with "tt"
I have never had any problems with ny of the fonts I have used but the worst that would happen is that some of the features like extended character sets might not be available to me. I have never used them to be honest so couldn't say

Re: font question
Sorry forgot to add, on mine you have to use the numerical pad on the right of your key board to use alternate characters.
