Ural (?) Red Squirrel
Figured a Red Squirrel should be Red, and besides I needed to get a feel for the cut.
Scrounged through Cherry until I found a piece where his head and claws might be red with the heart/sap line...... looked about right for short .91" Cherry cutoff.
Really meant for the black solid knot to be in the hole nearby.... Left a .03" allowance for the finishing path....may try Nudging Z up .01" for a trial.
Looks like he'll have lighter tipped ears
Recalculating finish toolpaths now for an Onsrud30 Engraving with .005"flat, and the Chinese 3"LOA, .25"shank, .25mmR tip for the fourth size and time for the tweaked size.
No WAY I'll Finish cut it now
Happy sap line went the way I thought!! brushed with Linseed/Beeswax "Butter" just so both sides have similar reaction to 60F/38%RH overnight.
Will cut as soon as Espresso/ Blood ratio is up in morning:)
Used a previously dimensioned/OSB?lacquered to Heck first button proto carrier board, and for the first time used CA and Duck brand "no residue" tape method....glad I did! Didn't know doing a roughing toolpath offset that went off Material Size(wanted possible picture frame size scrap)...went to bottom of material. GOOD to Know!!
NEED the extra Stickum of the duct tape.

Nice work Scott!
Nice piece of wood, just waiting for a squirrel to be added
Can't wait to see the end product....

Well you should learn to measure more accurately
Looking good so far Scott, hurry up & finish as I can't wait to see it complete, great work as usual

Oh yes, I found that out the hard way as well

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
Kinda glad I was off a little in the Z Martin....May have got into a dark grey streak if got it right.
Gotta run a .5" Pointed Round Over (PRO) around my Material Size Box, that I then offset THREE outwards withe the .125"downcut to get a bigger size/smoother edge/and a .25"fillet clean.
IF I DON'T cut the roundover about .35"deep, collet nut will be removing wood in one tiny spot....BAD!!!
Ran a preview for using the TINY .25mm Radius bit, as angle is WAY less than 5.36* and the 30* Engraving.....Not QUITE as good on hair on the chin, but better on edges because of small side angle on the ,125" shank. STILL going to run all 3 toolpaths separateley and compare individually.....pluses and minuses on all bits on this model/size.
Honest, John There's a European Red Squirrel of SOME species in there!!!
Of course if I muck it up....I get to name the new Species
Thanks Ed!
This only a proto...still planning on cutting at least one more. Got piece of firewood I got a flat back on that has a high big knot for his Head. Most MICKY MOUSE jigging you ever saw because it was balancing on the knot....BUT it worked!
Didnn't want any serious screws or nails in endgrain.....may have other uses. Cutting about Sunrise?

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
First pics are pretty boring, but show how tight it was with the 1.5"LOA .125"shank, .25mm TBN.
Only brushed with a stiff, and then a medium, but apparently I didn't get all the oil/wax off as much as I thought...so no totally raw pics
Off the machine pics coming next are MUCH better!!

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
Didn't get Quite the effect I wanted, but close...we'll see how he finishes.
HIS right claws could use a little undercutting, and maybe some Natural glazing?
Looks better in person, AND feels good

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
Comments appreciated John and Michael!
Thanks Jerry,
Unfortunately I was playing with depth to better see heartwood/sapwood line so roughed with a .125" downcut with only a .05"pass depth and 35% stepover so I could N(udge) Z down depending on the line....AND I did the entire Material size, and then 3 Profile passes with increasing allowance for a more usable scrap.
Roughing at IPS 1.5,1.5,16K for the entire Material size cut only was 3 hours.
Finishing was VERY conservative, and twice let it cut for an hour because I made Newbie mistake of not whacking my board down flush in case it had moved overnight
So I Z-Zeroed, and then Nudged my Z up .05" and ran for a few minutes at a time, and gradually Nudged Z down until it measured scrap edge close to .01" base in modeling.
Basically at 1,1,16k with 5% stepover it was 9:09:41 cutting against the grain(AND his delicate chin fur ridges worried me)
Model was only 2.5" at widest point, and 15% was under 1.25" wide.
A LOT of measuring model versus wood putzing time!!
Thanks again!

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
Didier,
Your comment made a beautiful start to the day.....ALMOST as good as the first sip of the day of espresso!
Was moving stuff on the windowsill so Squirrel could get full sun, and set it on the very last piece of Curly Maple cutoff, and said "Wait a minute!!"... I Kinda like it, and have two or three wide wall pieces of wood it would look good!!
Cutoff was from bookcase side pieces 22 years ago. always wondered what I would do with the split piece:) Other two were made into "Ladies"(Kept one for myself:) Thanks!!

Re: Ural (?) Red Squirrel
BUT Didier....It was a HECK of a lot better than me running a "Walrus"....then Nudging my Z down.05"...pressing Start and spindle Did NOT Start!!!
Delta S1 VFD has NO LIGHTS...fiddled and nothing
Now shut everything down back to the breaker...and waiting a few for a restart after checking Easy connections.
LAST thing I wanted to do today was search internet for my VFD and troubleshoot it!!!
Fingers crossed!
Electrical and I do NOT play well together!!!
