Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
THANKS Didier and Leo!!
(Didier.....In French is the "Di" pronounced "Dee" and rest pronounced as Parisian like us Yanks learn when we bother to take French in high school? Lots of Quebecois spoken 20km North of here, which kinda changes habits. NICE to know your name LGM !!! )
Yep, Liking that roughing and TBN bit's for the job were about $10 USD:)
Got BUNCHES of Chinese bits in the drawer, WAY in the back after trying them, and throwing the results away after hours of sanding
I bought same set after Randall did, as I trust the man:)
Mom just brought me home from buying stuff for a day trip (or two) to visit Dad with my brother.
SHE saw it and said it fit her hand beautifully, and she would just pick it up to fiddle with it like "Worry Beads".
Guess another one is up for Christmas
Thanks Michael! Wish I had used IPS .3,.3, 18K on the larger font on the front(used .5,.35,18K and lost 1 piece of an "O"), River Red Gum is a bit "splintery", and Linseed "Butter"only penetrated about .01" at 70F:( My normal mix for penetrating for my .02" machining allowance is 3D Illuminater (Earthpaint pine rosen)/Earthpaint Linseed/ and usually D-Limonene mixed 30/30/40, BUT last Rosen batch was more like molasses than a brushing lacquer, so didn't quite trust it:(
It's fine now after testing and going 20/40/40.
All font's were done with Onsrud's 30Engraving with .005" flat.
I did this without dowels like in "Beki's Bowl" as I trust my fences, and had sanded wood to to within .0015" of material set-up size...but discrepancies in the flip and carving the next day wound up with a .005" "Lip" to wet sand
Not too bad, but not perfect:)
Double boiler is heating up with my "Butter" mix..soaking 24 hours should improve finish,,,Saturday 8am pick up by brother doesn't leave much time..but at least the finish will be DEEP
Rambling:(
scott
Oh...No way stand for it will be finished tomorrow
Have to make Mom's Heart first the same way...and then test fit(possibly line with chamois?)
HATE not having the actual piece in hand to test fit
Second design may work... no idea of wood, but highly figured is a must.
LOTS of space for engraving on the base

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
DANG!!! Hated to send the Heart without a stand.....so went with the second version (in the previous pic) from 4 days ago when I was just trying concepts on this design tower.
ANYWAYS, The 3" 1/4: shank .25mm Chinese TBN, cuts JUST as well as the 1/8"shanks:)
Used Drillman1's .25"2F Downcut at IPS 1.5, 1.5,12K for Z-Level raster roughing with .03" allowance.
Chinese .25mm Radius TBN did great at 1,1,16K 4% stepover.
If you've never used AAAAA Quilted Big Leaf Maple...it can be problematical, as softer than Sugar Maple, and the grain goes EVERYWHERE! BEAUTIFUL wood, but easy to muck up.
The person delivering this to Dad will be here at 8am.....the Heart was in kitchen in it's molten bat, and then drying.
I'm doing my headless chicken act to use a 22 yr old scrap(with a hollow mortise chisel mark in it that was perfect for this cut:)
Things were going well, but taking too long. Got it cut out and wet sanded and looking good
ONLY PROBLEM WAS;
When I went from the shop into the kitchen, and put the two together....................................

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
THEY DIDN'T DARN FIT!!!!!!!!
That's what I get for rushing:(
NO CLUE where the problem is, as it was 4 days ago when I was putzing with concepts, and I trusted it like an idiot
Going to have to find where the problem is on the control computer Sunday.
some stupid error I know!
Oh well:)

Hmm, not sure how that can be salvaged except as separate parts.
I suspect you projected the tool path onto the dome shaped model?

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
It's OK G. , wasn't even going to DO the stand for the Heart,as it gets picked to go to Dad in 3 hours.
It was a last minute decision yesterday, and ONLY 3D tutorial I've worked along with in 4 months was Beki's "Clip Art Bowl" (which helped Immensely my first 2 sided 3D Heart)
Didn't even take the whole file to the control computer,as the 2 bit's hadn't even been added to my Tool Data base....I just took the depths and Levels and plugged in while spindle was warming up,
and I was finishing the bottom of the Scrap
Probably the most Newbie of Levels and Combine modes ignorance
Wasn't even going to post the base, EXCEPT for the finish of the Chinese TBNs on a difficult cutting piece of wood.
They cut as fine as My Onsrud Engraving bits, and my Onsrud .0625" TBN. Heart was a D&M "Heart..Card Suite" Bas model, and then resized proportionally to 3" on biggest axis, then changed to .45" model height for then copied to other side.
Here are my Newbie settings for the stand on THIS computer....control computer final version is slightly different(but shut down this am). Gotta run and get last coat on Heart!
TUTORIALS ON Sunday!

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
Scott,
When experimenting this kind of stuff, which often requires some adjustments and allowance, better give a try (at least for the female part) in a cheap material.
Not totally bulletproof as Murphy's law can still apply and you may get different results in the final material.

WOW - that quilted Maple is fully amazing.
I do hate being under the gun that way, but you are doing a fantastic none-the-less

I have actually just done a job where I did all the experimenting using MDF because I have some odd scrappy bits lying about, didn't even end up tryingLittleGreyMan wrote:Scott,

to match the 2 3D shapes as I seemed to be having lots of problems getting the male part to fit perfectly into the female part despite several different attempts
Glad I didn't try it all with decent wood, would have cost me way to much
Still not got tired of seeing all this amazing stuff you are doing Scott , keep it up & keep posting the pictures

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
!9 hours later and 11 hours being chauffeured:)
Still Dead beat, but Home:)
Thanks guys for the comments!!
Took the Quilted home as Dad said "I have faith YOU can Rescue it!"
Tears in his eyes as he felt the River Red Gum Graeme gave me, as he met Graeme and Jan 2 years ago...so the "Heart" Wood is special to them, as it came in a suitcase as gift fro Australia:)
Heart got one more coat(fifth) on the 5 hour drive up, and even my sister got a little misty:)
Dads's wife said "LIKE IT.......I LOVE IT!!!" You can FEEL the wood!!!.
Looong Fr***in' day:)
Pedestal will be jigged within a MM of it's life AFTER some more tutorials
Traded my Plane Tree (Lacewood0" Katahdin" for the ride:) Going to have to make another one of those for myself also:)
Yep Leo $120bf AAAAA is pretty amazing after 5-6 coats! Hmm. no remarks on glaring add/subtract level mistakes? I was sure that was the culprit
I'm beat now, BUT THANKS folks!!!
scott
Just LESS expensive hardwoods

Did a couple 3 inch pieces the other day.
Came out real good.
Small ball nose .5 R.
Both from red oak clear finish.

Good,Clean Cuts Mark!!
NICE!
Haven't CNC'd much Oak since a first week of cutting DISASTER:)
(and simply because I didn't use any in the house and don't have any lying around:)
Did you Rough and then Raster? With grain or against in red Oak?
If Offset, did you use Conventional?
Also interested in other people's Feeds and Speeds....what stepover?
3" objects feel REALLY nice in the hand
Congrats Mark!

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
Thank you Scott.
Oak is my favorite wood always has been even as a kid.
Wood was 12.62 thick, sides from drawers of an old oak desk.
No roughing, no offset, feed rate 1350,spindle speed 20,000 rpm
step over .25
Cut depth 3/8 inch or 9.525 in my case.
Took about 17 min. to cut.
I like the 3 inchers also, going to make a necklace from one of them.
Also did one from 1/4 in. oak, 2 in tall X 1-1/2 wide made a nick knack out of it.

Re: Tiny Chinese Tapered Ball Nose (continued)
Thanks Mark!
It tells me I need to find some total scrap wood and mess around at 18K(my max spindle speed) a bit:)
I haven't used the .5mm Radius one much yet. And the .75mm...not at all.
Usually use the .25mmRTBN, as that approximates the detail of my 30degree engraving with the .01"flat I usually use in my sub 2" stuff.
