First time using the VCarve /Engraving function with the flat area clearance selected. Two different bits are selected, a vbit and an end mill.
1. Which bit will be used first?
2. Will the VCarve software prompt me to change the bits and then continue to run the rest of the job?
Thank you.

Re: Vbit Clearance Tool
You'll get 2 tool paths
myName [Pocket]. <- for the clearance tool
myName <- for the Vbit you selected.
I run the pocket tool path first and bundle that in with other tool paths that use the same end mill.

Thank you for the quick reply. If I understand your answer correctly, I will save the two tool paths into separate files and run them independently from one another.

That's what I do. In fact using the Shapeoko post processor I can't save two different tools into the same file.

On most hobbyist machines, yes.scovell wrote:Thank you for the quick reply. If I understand your answer correctly, I will save the two tool paths into separate files and run them independently from one another.
You can merge toolpaths using different tools if you have an automatic tool changer (ATC) or if the control software of your machine handle multi-tool files and asks for manual tool changing. No idea if it's the case for Shark control.

Re: Vbit Clearance Tool
Just to mention...sometimes on some fonts and woods...It's best to reverse the default order of the toolpaths when you run it.
Carving the VCarve toolpath first, sometimes will help with tearout of cutting little pieces of unsupported delicate wood. Most important though is to Z-Zero in the same spot as the first bit, so the Z-Zero depth is the same on both cutters.

Re: Vbit Clearance Tool
I agree with Scott. The rule for the toolpaths order is that there is no rule. You have to analyse your job and choose the appropriate order. And sometimes add some toolpaths. The preview toolpath feature may help identifying potential issues as you see machining on screen.

Re: Vbit Clearance Tool
If you were to perform the V-Carve toolpath First ---
In the preview it looks as if everything is cut through. It may not be necessary to run the End mill toolpath to clear out what is left. This would definitely save some time not having to run the End mill for clearance.
Of course if you did run the end mill toolpath those free pieces would fly everywhere if they are in fact cut free during the V-Carve toolpath.
Just a thought!
