3d relief carving with Aspire
3d relief carving with Aspire
I'm looking for how to turn a photo portrait into a realistic 3d relief carving. My efforts are wanting in that, say, darker eyebrows become indented, as do hair roots, and even lips. Can anyone direct me to a good source for steps that give real results? Thanks. Richard

All I can say is "good luck". The quest for software that does that can be likened to the search for the Holy Grail.
What does work very well is something like Photo VCarve. But that is not "3D". Nor is it relief carving-like.

Thanks for the replies. I suspected as much from my own searches. The carrot is some of the carvings I've seen on YOutube where it appeared, maybe just hopefully, that such simplicity had been achieved. I'll check out your PDF, Michael, and thank you. Richard

Re: 3d relief carving with Aspire
Hey rweigand,
Modeling a portrait is probably the most challenging thing to model, but it can be done, with lots of practice!
Years ago (way back in Aspire 3) we created a set of tutorials dedicated to modeling George Washington's face - you can watch the set of videos here if you like:
Please bear in mind that this was filmed using Aspire 3 - so you will notice the component tree will be different to how it is today - BUT the concepts & techniques behind building up all the parts and how to sculpt your model pretty much remain the same) This is intended for the more advanced/experienced relief modeler, so if you've not touched on any form of modeling then I highly recommend that you go through all of the standard 3D Modeling tutorials first before jumping into portraits.
Hope this helps,
Thanks,

This post: viewtopic.php?p=104810#p104810 mentions the tutorial series being on the Aspire disc (i.e. DVD).
This post: viewtopic.php?p=80807#p80807 mentions the tutorial section (probably within Aspire 3).

So, unless you can find someone with a version 3 DVD or can convince the Vectric folk to post it here you might be out of luck.High quality versions of all the training tutorials (30+ hours) are supplied on the Aspire installation DVD...

The following YouTube link appears to have the entire series of videos for the George Washington portrait modeling (be sure to go to YouTube itself, so that you can see all of the videos listed in order from the Overview all the way through to the conclusion).
