Another VCarve Pro + Cut3D combo Sign
Another VCarve Pro + Cut3D combo Sign
Carl Lombardo - owner of CL Signage in New Jersey designed and routed and engraved this stunning sign using a combination of VCarve Pro and Cut3D.
The sign is 60” x 42” and carved from real cedar, including “Bucky” which after routing was too smooth so Carl dusted off his hand tools and gave him a ‘hand carved’ look. Bucky was a real white tail deer that lived and was hand fed by the local employees – the building was renamed for him after he passed.
Carl likes the sign except the purple posts which were chosen by the committee! Note the smalts used in the vertical lines in the background – to give an old world touch.
Another great result!

Tony,
Thanks for posting the great sign. Good inspiration.
I have a question. Last week I combined my first Cuts3D with VcarvePro. Worked great of course. However, I was puzzled about a situation.
When the Cuts3D file was combined into VCP, the C3D portion obliterated any drawings elements I added which overlaid the C3D.
In the example shown in this sign, the deer has cutouts (which is pretty neat). How did they cut through the deer? I assume they cut the dropouts using elements drawn in VCP. If that's so, how did they see the VCP elements when C3D seems to obscure everything it overlaps.
I hope this is understandable. Let me know if you want a sketch.
Thanks
Dave
PS, Great sign.

on that note
i have only begun to scratch the surface on this. i took a cut 3d file and imported it into vcarve it. it lays it at x&y as if it were machined in cut3d,
question how do i capture it (3dfile) to move it where i want so as i can vcarve lettering around it ??

Carl has sent some additional information to help clarify how he made this sign, plus a very interesting tip on how to design signs that people will look at.
I would like to clarify: Bucky is not ‘a part of the sign’ Bucky is simply a separate 3d carve that is doweled and glued to the sign. Reason is I wanted Bucky to be a 3rd dimension higher than the rest of the sign. To create the cut outs I simply traced the bitmap of Bucky and incorporated it into the rest of the art so the vcarving on the outline would not carve away wood under Bucky.
Lastly, most of my signs have holes in them similar to my head… Seriously, like a flag or banner, our eyes ‘see’ movement and we look at it to investigate it, good movement? Bad movement, runaway? My theory is if as we move past a sign with a hole in it we perceive the background behind the sign, through the hole to be moving and our eye focuses on the movement. Even if it is not true, it sounds good to the customer and separates my work from others. In the past when I did it and it was tedious, now with a ShopBot, it is easy.
I promise I will register soon…..
Thank You,
Carl

I really like the bucky's sign, I like to engrave lines to fake wood jointing, (top panel on picture)for I work mostly with Signfoam and Extira.
And the holes thing is an eyecatcher for sure. I willl soon post some v-crv-cut3d combo for I got cut 3D last week and sarted to mingle with it.
Can't wait.
I will soon need some of Norbert's cool 3D graphics!!! (Salut Norbert)
Dan !!!

Hi Dan
I am always very impressed by the carved signs that you produce, I will admit you that sometime I feel jealous, because
I would want to make them this way. I was in the domain of the sign for 20 years, and there is still people that can impress
me, this is the case for Carl and you also Dan, I invite all the people to look this forum and visit your website www.enseignesbp.com and
you will see that this man is a pro.
