My version of Michael Tyler's Cake stand

Post by jarm2 »

I made the Project of the Month by Michael Tyler out of oak. I added a personal touch by using some of the scraps from the carving to make a more interesting spindle. I stained it with cherry stain and coated it with rattle can clear coats. Hope you like it.

Looks real nice, I made one this weekend also. I may have to do the spindle nicer like yours. It not finished yet so I can make some changes. Great work and nice idea.

Great work.

It's great to see you have adapted the design to make it your own :)

Like the look! I want to make one but my shapeoko 3 is limited to 16” by 16”. The stand instructions require an 11x20 inch material. I have tried to figure out how to copy and paste the individual parts to new projects to use on my machine, but to no avail. Any chance of getting the pieces broken down down into smaller sizes?

Also, trying to put a cake dome on top, but they are either 8 or 9” or 10.5 or larger, so I need to enlarge the shelf a bit. :D

Hi,

1) Open the original file and Save-As a different name of your choice

2) Delete parts not fitting on your machine bed

3) Change material size to suit and arrange the part(s) to fit material and make any desired resize

4) Recalc Toolpaths and Preview to verify outcome is ok

Repeat above steps for the remaining parts you had previously deleted from the original file

Thanks. I tried something like that, but will give it another go. What do you think the odds are that I could scallop the top AND bottom edges and have the final cut through on the cake shelf match up. Did you give it a try ever? Will get at it again tomorrow. Again, thanks

Hi,

You can select/copy the scallop vectors to the other side and apply the same bit/Toolpath (you wouldn’t need to create another profile cutout of course.

Both sides will then carve the scallops and will line up perfectly, since this is a two-sided dowel aligned project already.
