Re: Smoothing Hand Plane
Yes, I have used it and it works well. I purchased the Iron from Lee Valley. It’s O1 tool steel and holds an edge very well. It takes a little training to adjust it properly as you tap the blade and the wedge lightly to get it the way you want it for shaving thickness. But it leaves a very smooth surface, no sanding required. The feel is much more connected to the cut than a steel handplane as you are wood on wood.

Re: Smoothing Hand Plane
Hope you got the angle perfect, as that looks as comfortable/ergonomic as ANY plane in my collection!!!!
One you get used to adjustment it becomes second nature, and shavings you can read a newspaper through are normal:)
Congrats!!
scott
Micro bevel is the way to go with the steel, using the Veritas angle jig with the steel roller/holder. Way faster keeping a shaving edge.

Re: Smoothing Hand Plane
Scott,
Yes, I spent a lot of time working on the angle and the face that the Iron rests on to get it perfectly flat, lapping it with sand paper over a granite surface plate. I have the Vestitas jig and use it to sharpen all my chisels and plane irons. I added a 10 degree back bevel to this as well as the micro bevel and got very thin shavings and more important a perfect finish on the surface I was smoothing. Next I'm making a block plane with a 1 inch Hock blade. Making that as ergo as possible also. The smoother feels great in my hands.

Re: Smoothing Hand Plane
Yep, Perfectly flat is the thing most people forget when they purchase a plane.
They don't even bother to back off the base, never mind the iron
Like you, I use granite for my final.
It's hard to believe how far some of the iron planes and their irons are so far out of true.
You'll like the Hock:)
That REALLY looks comfortable as heck:)
I wimped out and spent WAY too much money one day at Lie-Neilson's shop, when I saw it was one town away from my grand parents graves...
The ONLY planes I ever bought that needed NO work on them before using.
A low angle skew plane next?

Re: Smoothing Hand Plane
Actually I'm in process of refining the blockplane into a two piece design where the inside is also done with the CNC. I'll post in a few weeks when that's complete.
