Core box bits

Post by zaxis »

I am in the process of designing tool paths for a mantle clock. The side pieces have rectangular openings with arched tops. As part of the design the outside edges of these openings require a 3/16 radius cove for decretive purposes. My question is would a 3/8 core box bit be the choice for this. If so what category are they put in. In Vcarve Pro there is no category to add it to unless i choose round tipped end mills etc. I plan to cut the coves first then use a .25 end mill to make the cutout and leave half of the cove. Speeds and feeds are also a question mark. :?:

You can add any bit you have on hand with the Tool Database.
Just enter the information.
I put mine in similar to the Round nose (cloned an RN)

Does the core box bit seem like a logical choice for what I want to do?

Yes, that's what I'd use.

Your pass depths are not going to be equal. For example if you do the 3/16" depth in 3 passes of 1/16" each then the first pass will be barely removing any material while the last will be doing so along the entire length of the cutting edge. So, deeper initial pass and finer last pass--the ones in between in decreasing depths.

On the third pass reaching a depth of 3/16 I should have a 3/16 radius cove shouldn't I???
