Gluing at all ends! !
Hello all,
This might be crazy but I would like to make a double sided simple sign that is bigger than my cnc. I was planning on tiling in 3 sections than glue together after carving and repeat the same with the another sign carve (tile) and than glue together. After these 2 signs are dried than I was planing on gluing both signs together. Now should I put a backing board in between them or just glue the 2 signs together by themselves. After all gluing together it should be about 1.5" thick.
Or do you all think a 34" x 24" x .75" is thick enough for this size and just carve (tile) and cut each side than glue together.
Hope this makes since..
Not really sure how thick the bigger signs should be and by the way I will be using Mariata Pine.
Thank you all for your comments rather good or bad.

I don't have a suggestion for material, but I do have this: Size the front and back tiles differently so the joints don't line up when they are glued together. Then you won't need a backing board.

If your sign height is less than the width of your machine, because most machines allow you to extend the length beyond the length of the machine if your machine does the same you might be able to carve one end then move the work piece and carve the second half.
To add to Fixit Mike's suggestion if you alternate the length of tiles on each side then overlap the tiles on the back so the longer ones are on top of the shorter ones, the unit will be even stronger... more so if you do it both vertically and horizontally which will further enhance the tiles and pattern.

Re: Gluing at all ends! !
You did not mention the material that you are using to make the sign.
My thoughts are to "sandwich" a sheet of 1/2" or better plywood in the middle - why take chances?
Use a good quality exterior ply, heavily primed.
Cement, or epoxy and screw the sides to the plywood, fill in the holes and paint the whole thing.
The plywood in the middle also helps to give rigidity and something for mounting.
I have seen the pro sign makers make a metal frame to sandwich inside.

It was great seeing Debbie and you again, too!
Yes - back home and working like crazy (except during breaks for forum and facebook surfing). I leave for Israel next Thursday, so I'm trying to fit three weeks worth of work within the next 7 days.
I think you two are "on the road" even more than I am! Have fun in California!

I've not heard of "Mariata Pine" but I have heard of muircata or swamp pine (I think it's sometime called Bishop's Pine). Perhaps Mariata could be Marietta as in the town in Georgia?

Hi all,
I just wanted to get back at this even thought its been a while. Well I used what fixitmike said and it was perfect I made them just like he said. This came out perfect and the customer loved it well as well as i did.
Thank you fixitmike and you all for your time it is very sweet of you and yes I did use Mariata Pine wood and for now on I will make it different on both sides as I do believe this will make a strong heavy sign.
Thank you all again,
Happy New Years,
Donna
