resting toolpath cutting deeper than finish

Post by ohiolyons »

I'm helping someone out trying to diagnose a problem.
I have previewed the file and it "cuts" perfect on screen.
The resting toolpath is cutting deeper than the finishing toolpath leaving a moat around each 3d image.

I told him that if it the resting is cutting deeper than the finish it is only 2 possible things.

1 The wood is flexing from the release or increase in tension in the wood from Roughing and Finishing toolpaths.

or

2 bit wasn't tight enough and it moved.

Since he is using a 1/16" Tapered Ball Nose for the Resting toolpath I ruled out that the up-cut bit was "pulling" the wood up

Was the larger bit a downspiral pushing it down?

Not certain it is complicated see my other post today "End Mill as Finish Toolpath"

I will get with him and check it out, but my guess is that it was a spiral up since that is a more common bit and this is occurring inside a Woodcraft Store.

Could simply be that he didn't set his z zero accurately enough after the tool change

that is a good thought, he is a little undisciplined.

That maybe it!!!

He zeros x, y and z in the center even though he is cutting away the center.
So after his first cut he manually moves to a spot not cut and assumes the Z is the same.

I think you hit it on the head, Thanks

Regardless of where the x & y zero positions are set if I am referencing off the top of the material then I will always set my z zero in a position that I know isn't going to be machined away, easy enough to just put a pencil mark as a reference so you don't forget where you had previously zeroed the z axis

100% agree about zeroing!

Maybe he will become a believer too! He was going to try again.

Huh. Just noticed we have two separate threads going on the same topic.

Oops!

Not same topic same file different issues.

I've found in the past if you try to do too much in one post certain aspects get ignored.

I therefore broke it up into 2 separate topics.

Sorry if that caused any problems, but in past multiple questions in one topic produced less than satisfactory results.

Ok. Sure sounds like the same issue. The only thing different is you mentioned you previewed the file in this thread (so I assume you have possession of the file).

In the other thread you mentioned you don't have the file. So, is your friend having the same (or really similar) problem on two different files?

Just want some clarity here. Can you post a screenshot of the toolpath preview for this particular file?

EDIT: well, maybe screenshot won't do any good since you said it looked perfect in the preview

I’m going to let him cut it again. With him being more disciplined on his zeroing. He is a Woodcraft employee learning on a company computer in the store on a store CNC and only part time. I don’t have unlimited access to him or his files.

Ok. Careful zeroing is always good practice.
