Follow sloped taper
I need to make a key for a range hood. I have the key shaped used the molding toolpath and the profile toolpath. What I need to do is run a cove bit down the length of the long sloped, tapered edge then along the bottom of the key and then back up the other long sloped, tapered edge.
Any ideas as to how I can accomplish this would be great?
I know I can do this at my router table easily enough, I would like to know if/how I would do it on the CNC.
I have attached the file I created in Aspire 8.5
Thanks.

Offset a perimeter vector inwards about .001, and project a profile toolpath onto the model, using an appropriate sized ballnose bit.

Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion but it didn't work. It just cut at the same level, it didn't follow the taper down the slope.
Maybe because it is not a 3D model?

Ok. I'm starting to get somewhere
Using a combination of fluting tool path and profile on the line cut. Just need to figure out my start depth and cut depth.

After you have created the preview of the key using the molding toolpath, go to the modeling drop down menu. At the bottom is create component from preview. Click on that and then use that component as the model for Gerry's suggestion.

Re: Follow sloped taper
Thank you! I didn't know that could be done. That is a more efficient way of making the cove cuts.

You can do the cove around the ramp with one fluting toolpath. No component/model needed. Your side view has all the info you need, and I've added dimensions created by Aspire to show you the where I got the depth of cut and the length of ramp before it goes flat.

Re: Follow sloped taper
Unfortunatly I was not able to open your file. I have Aspire 8.5
I would have liked to have seen how you did the fluting in one pass.
I cut the key out. I was pleased with how it came out.

8.5 version attached. May differ a bit from the 9.0 version, but the fluting toolpath would be the same.

Re: Follow sloped taper
Thanks for converting the file to 8.5
I see what you did and have a better understanding of the fluting path now. My only question is how you arrived at the start depth of 0.1875 Where you cutting the flute to a depth of 1/8"? So the start depth would have been that 1/8" plus the 1/16" that had been removed from the top of the blank, 0.125 + 0.0625 = 0.1875?
Appreciate your help!

Re: Follow sloped taper
Your moulding tool path was set to cut 1/16" under the top of the board. To that I added 1/2 the diameter of the ball nose bit I used for the fluting cove. I started out using a 1/4" ball nose bit, but when I redid it all for 8.5 I may have selected a 3/8" bit without going back and updating my cut depth. To get a little more depth using the 3/8" bit the cut depth should have been 0.0625 + 3/16.Keith Larrett wrote:I see what you did and have a better understanding of the fluting path now. Re: Follow sloped taper
This is the finished project. The key, lower rail, center stile and two panels were all cut using Aspire.
I had to cut the key twice. When I applied the stain to the first key I neglected to take into account the sloped face of the key was essentially all end grain, so it absorbed to much stain and was very dark. Before applying the stain on the second key I applied a couple coats of diluted sanding sealer.
Thank you again for the help.
