Surfacing bits
So what is everyone using for tooling for surfacing spoilboards and just general wood products? I am using a 2.2kw spindle that can accept up to a 1/2" shank bit. These are pretty pricey, don't want to get more than I need.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Surfacing bits
I've used the Onsrud 91-000 for years to surface my MDF spoilboard as well as all sorts of hardwood and softwood. I've tried others but I always go back to that bit.

Re: Surfacing bits
I use one of the surfacing bits by Amana (Toolstoday in the U.S.) They have rotatable/replaceable carbide inserts. I haven't needed to rotate the insert even once in over a year.
Sizes from 1" to 4" diameters. The bigger the pricier!

Thanks Adrian, that seems reasonable.
Edwan, which one do you use?

One for MDF, and one for all hardwoods from Cherry to Bloodwood(and in between)for surfacing/dimensioning.

Re: Surfacing bits
Like that one too, Scott. Like the added depth. What kind of feeds and speeds and stepover do you use when surfacing?

Re: Surfacing bits
For MDF spoilboard, I rarely need to cut very much more than .01-.02", so 180IPM/16K/40%
For hardwoods best results are .02-.08 pass for roughing, and a final .02" finish pass at 120-180IPM/14-16K/40% Offset/conventional works best.
For wicked warped stuff, I set up a toolpath 180IPM pass at .05" pass, and then Nudge Z down .03-.05" and rerun the toolpath until final .02" pass cleans it all up.
I Have found them as cheap as $18.
Only 1hp spindle here, so I always use a long ramp to ease it in for the initial cut on S2S.

Re: Surfacing bits
I use a 1-1/4 CMT or Freud bit, that I order from Amazon.
I don't use a spoil board anymore. I use 3/16 Pressed hardboard strips as needed and throw in the wood stove as they get used up.

Re: Surfacing bits
Interesting how most of you are using the less expensive tools. I had been looking at Amana ones mentioned above, but was cringing at spending that much money. Other than the replaceable carbides and larger diameter, is there really any advantage to those? I only have a 4x4 machine, so I can afford to walk away for awhile while surfacing if I use a smaller/less expensive tool.
Thanks for all the replies.

John,
What size spindle/router are you running that on?

Re: Surfacing bits
Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go with the Onsrud 91-000.
Can you guys with these, give me some general feeds & speeds to get started?

Re: Surfacing bits
Only shaving off 0.02" to 0.03" at a time, I run mine at:
10,000 to 12,000 rpm
5 inches per second Feed (300 inches per minute)
3 inches per second Plunge (180 inches per minute)
Depending on your machine, you may want to go 3 inches per second Feed, 2 inches per second Plunge.
Oh, the pocket is set for Offset, Conventional with a 20% stepover, 2" Ramp Plunge Move.
