Roto Zip Bit Experiment - Failure
In my quest to find an inexpensive down cut spiral bit in my CNC, I tried a 0.125" Roto Zip bit. Things looked promising for about 3 minutes then the bit broke running at 18K @ 60 ipm. OK, so I need to fiddle with speeds and feeds right? Not! Upon inspection, I discovered that the bit flexes a tremendous amount. The photos show a thru hole centered in a hex pocket except for the fact that the hole isn't round (yes, it was drawn as a circle). The profile cutout shot clearly shows significant flex during ramped plunges. Lesson learned and added to my wall of shame.

Nice experiment Mark.
I have trouble not breaking Roto Zip bits by hand. If you look at how they are cut there isn't much center stock.

Mr Mark, if you are looking for CHEAP .125 bits try eBay. I bought two ten packs, one pack is flat bottomed cutters, the other is ball nose.
You will need a .125 collet if you do not already have one. I tried one of those adapter collets. That did not work real well, seems it did not hold onto the bits very well at all.
The cost was less than $10 for ten of them.

What has surprised me is that I am still on my first one! I have cut quite a bit with it. At a buck a piece it is hard to beat.

I've had really good luck with the cheap ebay bits, they seem to last pretty good. Maybe I'm just not that picky.
The problem is I've yet to find a down spiral cheap bit. I think that is what Mark was going for.

Re: Roto Zip Bit Experiment - Failure
I use 0.125" spiral end mills and ball nose bits purchased from Ebay vendors and I'm pleased with the cut and longevity. Might have to wait a few weeks for delivery but you can't beat the price. I use ER-16 collets and they work well in my Porter Cable router - adapter and collets purchased from Precise Bits.
Highpockets was right, I'm looking for down spiral bits without breaking the bank.

+1 Ger,
I use Drillman1's .125 and .0625" Downcuts all the time in a variety of hardwoods with excellent results, and usually get the bits within days.
Ordered several times, and always fast shipping and consistent high quality and dimensions.

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself
