Ruined Pocket and Profile Sign
Ruined Pocket and Profile Sign
Created a simple sign using pocket and v-bit paths with advanced options cutting down .200" then cut out sign with profile path. Works with .200" but I tried another with .275" and re calc all paths. Cuts fine for v-bit and numbers and border but when the Profile goes to cut out, first its rests in middle of 4 where v-bit left off. Before it lifts to move and begin its path it slices through the top of 4. See images. Happened Twice.
Is it advanced toolpath options?
Is it post processor?
Is something else wrong?
Please Help

Router bit could have slipped down.

No. It didn't slip down. Did the exact same thing twice. Good suggestion though

Check your safe Z and Z1 and Z2 setting on the project

Mine are set as follows, in the image. I set them the same as Vectric's Tutorials in several places on their site.

Why do you have "project onto 3D model" selected. You don't need that.

Re: Ruined Pocket and Profile Sign
There was a bug way back in VCP8.014 that was cured, but maybe check and see if the toolpath has a blue line through the "4" like on this Fleur-de-lis button in pics?
Is your endmill made to plunge cut?
What are Z Plunge rates for that cut?
Just wondering if possibly you were losing steps on that cut(if the plunge was last move)?

Re: Ruined Pocket and Profile Sign
Are you re-zeroing the Z after changing the bit? Is it 100% accurate?
As Leo says turn off the Project onto 3D. You don't need that as there is no 3D model and it can sometimes cause issues if it's turned on when not needed.

Re: Ruined Pocket and Profile Sign
My suspicions appear to have been correct. I haven't paid too much attention to the Z1 and Z2 and home position settings until now. I've attached a new image for explanation sake. So when the 60° vbit finished its path it stopped and moved for tool change. After changing to 1/4" mill the machine moved to position where the vbit finished. In the middle of the number 4 on my wooden piece, .200" above the pocket's bottom. Because the pocket is .250" the mill skimmed the top of the 4.
When I changed the z settings to .400" there was enough clearance that the bit was now higher above not only the pocket but the whole wooden piece

I'm probably missing something here, but how can this happen when you have zero set to the top of material? What you describe makes it sound like you're zeroing at the bottom of the pocket cut...?dbornyk wrote:My suspicions appear to have been correct. Doesn't sound like he zeroed the second tool.

Or zeroed below the actual top of the material.TReischl wrote:Doesn't sound like he zeroed the second tool.
