Sidewinder sighting

Post by mikeacg »

Gary Campbell visited my shop today and left a new toy for me! Can't wait to get it fired up and start doing more rotary machining with Aspire!

Is that just a back knife, or is there a spindle as well? (almost looks like a spindle in the picture).

Much more efficient method of creating round profiles than a 4th axis!!

Charlie - Gary and his buddy were in a hurry so they didn't get lunch or cookies! I'll have to drop some off next time I get over to Marquette.

Russell - I've got it all! It has a router so it can mill but it has a clever locking mechanism so it will turn as well. I am pretty excited! I have it all set up now - just working out details (wraps around x unlike the Stinger which wraps around y). I'm not sure where 0,0 is with the chuck on it so I'm not running it until I talk to Gary again. Other than that I am ready to start making stuff on the recoil. Still need a little more cogitating on the lathe side as my code writing skills have been languishing since my CP/M and BASIC days... (Does that date me a bit?)

Gary,

I'm ready to start with the lathe! Are you home yet? I have so many ideas that I want to try!

Using Aspire to create an optimized rounding toolpath works great!

Cedar one was done on the recoil on my Stinger I when I first got it (May 2011) so I thought I try to run a similar design on the new machine.

Took the opportunity to try out the carving texture option in Aspire. I will be using this a lot now that I see it!

Mike...
If I knew you were going to make all that artsy fartsy stuff, I would have raised the price! Looks good, buddy!

How are the speeds compared to your "other" rotary?

Gary,

Artsy? I was just trying to throw as much at the machine as I could to get a feel for it. It is a whole lot faster than my Stinger I was - and I haven't really tried pushing it yet. I've been setting up the files with conservative speeds so nothing flies off the machine and through the window! Now that I understand how it works, I'll be upping the ante.

Suggestions on how to get up-to-speed with the lathe operation? I have a couple files you left on the machine but I'm not sure what to do with them! I'm working on profiles for my upcoming projects so I will be ready!

Call me if you get bored...
