Wooden Spoons
Anyone else working on wooden spoons? I'm making progress with each design.

Re: Wooden Spoons
I started using the new moulding toolpath introduced in 8.5 in order to cut the bowl-shaped part of the spoon, both front and back. I have to say I am very happy with not only the shapes I've been getting but also the cutting times.
The thing to know, that we learned the hard way, is that the moulding toolpath doesn't respect the pass depth of the tool being used. If the dish shape is too deep to cut in one pass, you need to add another toolpath before in order to cut away some of the material.

I like those spoons.
As for adding another toolpath to clear out a deep dish, have you tried this: I have been using it to make some bowls.

Re: Wooden Spoons
If you use the larger area clearance tool option that Bob has mentioned then the clearance tool will respect the cut depth in the tool data base in the same way that the roughing toolpath does when using 3d toolpaths.
You could even use the same bit for the clearance if you wanted

Re: Wooden Spoons
After seeing the pictures of the spoons made using the moulding toolpath I decided to give it a try. I have used the moulding toolpath successfully to make mouldings but Unfortunately, my attempts to generate the toolpath for a spoon has proven to be fruitless. When I draw the outside shape of the spoon and a shape vector for the spoon cup the tool path that is generated is not right. Please share how you use the moulding toolpath to generate the spoon bowl.
Thanks
Dan

Re: Wooden Spoons
Thanks Bob and Martin for the suggestion to use a clearance tool. I will try it and am confident it will work to achieve the intended result.

Re: Wooden Spoons
Dan, for some reason, when you draw a closed shape, the profile vector is always applied to the outside of the drive vector. This means the drive vector must be the inside shape of the spoon and not the outside shape. For my spoon, the inside shape is a small oval and then I use a flat tool to level the bump in the middle of that small oval.dbrook wrote:When I draw the outside shape of the spoon....
I'll upload the .crv files for my spoon, both front and back, as two examples. Note that I missed the clearance tool option of the moulding toolpath, so I added two additional roughing toolpaths to clear out material. I'll improve on that when I get a chance. This is one of the few chances I have to upload a file that doesn't exceed the size restriction of the forum!

Re: Wooden Spoons
Here's a newer version of the wooden spoon that uses a clearance tool for the moulding toolpath. The preview looks good, but we haven't actually cut it yet.
Thanks,
Andy

Re: Wooden Spoons
Andy,
Thank you for the reply and the example files. It is now clear to me now what was happening with my attempts and why.
You have done a really nice job designing the spoon.

Andy,
Thanks for the example files!
Haven't had much chance to play with the moulding toolpath yet, but always looking at cooking utensils I can make myself

I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself
