I have used the techniques that were posted previously. One of the problems is the grain of the wood show through.

Oak is a poor choice because of the open pores and pronounced grain.what wood "would be a better choice? Maple is hard to come by here
In general look for light colored woods with subtle and/or tight grain. Some suggestions are:
Maple (hard is better than soft)
Basswood
Polar
Ash (depending on the grain)
Tight grained spruce
Light colored pieces of sapele or mahogany

I have also found on a PVC in wood that a darker gel stain applied liberally for about 3 minutes then wiped off tends to bring out the deeper details quite nicely.
But as has been mentioned stick to the tighter grained woods.
Trial and error is what has worked best for me. You actually stumble across some things that are actually pretty neat and you will use them again.
And most of all search the forum and view older posts. There have been some incredible pieces shared on this site for PVC
