Bowl Curious

Post by KWiK »

For some reason I am having trouble uploading and attaching a crv file, but basically I am curious if anyone has tried making a bowl using a Dome/dish clipart and then Subtract and scale it to make the inside of a bowl Seems like it should work for a basic bowl with no lip but I am curious if anyone has tried it.

Yeah but those are in Aspire. I have made bowls in other programs and brought them into Vcarve as stl files, but I was looking at the Dome clipart files and thought it might be a easy way to make a bowl...... albiet pretty basic bowl. Just thinking out loud I guess ;)

Me too. I haven't had time to try anything, but had the same thought. Let me know if you come up with anything. Still trying to learn the 3D stuff.

Yes you can: After import, go to modeling at the bottom left and click on it. At the top the 2nd line down and the 2nd icon from the left, click on it. The new menu will give you all the options needed.

As well as being able to create a bowl shape using the dones/dishes you can also do it using the moulding toolpath which should give you more options for the shape, you will end up with a small piece in the centre that will need to be machined away no matter how small you make the circle to use as a rail

Martin Never thought of that, what a great idea. Have you made one with that method? I think the chances of that small circle surviving is pretty slim.

No I haven't personally made any bowls, have done a couple of plates but that is all, I only thought of it because I have seen some people do some really creative work with the moulding toolpath
Gave it a quick try after reading your post with a vector i created by joining an ark & a straight line & because the moulding toolpath will only generate a shape to the outside of a closed vector made the circle 0.01mm diameter. The preview looked pretty good but the hump in the middle looked bigger than I thought it would be

You could cut the circle vector in two and run the molding toolpath twice, once for each side of the dish.
This way you wouldn't get the bump in the center.

I used the molding toolpath.
You can invert the shape to cut the opposite side of the dish

I used the clipart domes that were included in VCP. Double sided machining, with dowels.
