Don't know if this is how you done it Michael. But this is how I would do it.
In Solidworks draw up whatever profile you would like to twist and subsequently bend .
I chose to twist a .25 x .5o rectangle 900 deg. over 24 inches. Then used flex again to bend the piece 360 degrees.
It is up to the modeler to place the bends to their liking as it is positional along the axis in all 3 axes.
I would then create all the unique patterns that I would want and mirror and array both rectangular and circular until it was to my liking.
All said and done I would save my entire model or assembly as and STL to import into VC position in the material and carve away.
Please keep in mind this would be my way of attacking this. It is not the end all way to do it as I am sure many others have differing methods.
