Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
My sister likes Gary Cooper, so what cnc bit and settings in Photovcarve would you recommend for this pic? Size is to be 10" on the longest side. The other side will be about 8". Pic attch.

Have a read through this post which may be of help to you, finishing plays a major part with these from what I have read on the forum. Don't expect to get great results just by using someone elses settings, there are far to many factors that play a part. Try a small test area & be prepared to tweak the settings a bit to get the best results on your own machine
opps, helps if you post the link

Also, you need to resize your pic and not use this one as this is a low resolution photo. You need a high resolution photo to begin with for it to come out a lot nicer than what I had to work with.

Re: Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
I'm a long way short of being an expert as I have never been able to get good results with Photovcarve (keep meaning to try again) but it would be a good idea for you to post what you intend to use as a substrate for cutting.
The advice you get if this is to be machined in wood may well be different to advice given if this is to be a lithophane machined from something like corian
As Tony has said you need to start with a high resolution image, BMP or Tiff is better than Jpeg if you can find one

Thanks folks. I did not think that it could be a lithophane. Sorry about that. But someone might enjoy trying it as a lithophane.
I was going to cut it in timber. I have no idea what timber yet. Lots of folks in the US use maple, but our maple is different in Australia.
I did a try using the trial software, so it has watermarks in it somewhere but here is my try - see pic. It is just cut on some scrap marine hardwood plywood.
I did it at 0.08 deep. 120%. 90 degree vbit. 33% line angle.
I just roughly painted it and sanded the surface for the trial.
How do I improve it?

I tweaked the contrast on the pic - attch
Re: Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
I re-sampled the image to 300 dpi in gimp.

That is not too bad of a first attempt. Now to get all the paint off After cutting did you use some sort of finish before painting? I like using water base paints. After I put it on I immediately wipe off excess so I can reduce the sanding needed. Sometimes I can get almost all the excess of without sanding, others I give a 2nd coat to. but rather do this then sand it all away.

Re: Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
some use shellac, some use a coat or two of poly. It stops the paint from bleeding, that's one reason I use water base paint.

Re: Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
What I don't quite understand is, do you use water based poly with the water based paint? Would not the water based paint be a problem on the oil based poly otherwise?
Thanks
Mike
Thanks

Re: Which settings for Gary Cooper in Photovcarve?
I think I should be more specific.
I have this poly http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/ ... tails/1512
and this stain http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/ ... tails/1520
I just can't see how I seal with poly and then stain with these. I doubt the stain will do well on the poly.
Should I just toss these aside and go waterbased with poly and stain or paint?
