Dust boot design for CNC

Post by Phil »

I came across a design for a CNC dustboot that I thought others might be interested in, so here it is.

I guess I was wrong - no interest at all.

It's not bad :), just kinda custom for a particular machine. Personally, I prefer brush type with magnetic brush holders that allow different length brushes and more work clearance. But thanks for sharing! Always great to see different ideas! P.S. I probably would have machined a groove for the plastic strip, and epoxied in, but then again, I use epoxy for everything....

Glen, I agree. I think a brush would be a worthwhile improvement, especially one held in place with magnets. I like the design because it appears to be effective and easy to build.

Have a look at this guy's design. I like how he makes his own brush system from some cheap dust brushes.

Best shoe I've used is Kent's one (https://www.kentcnc.net/nc)

I like this one, with this design you can work with brushes of different length.

Actually, I "am" interested. I like it.

I think a modified version using a brush type but fixed position is something I plan to do.

Hi Leo, I'm curious. What do you like better about a fixed position shoe? My current shoe is fixed and I'm thinking an adjustable unit would be better.

I like that the spacing between workpiece and shoe is constant.

I like that I can change bits just by raising the z axis above the shoe.

I am thinking of a shoe that; 1) swings out of the way and 2) has adjustable height for different thickness parts.

Kent has spacers available for his shoes.

I would have purchased a Kent shoe but the configuration of my bot needs an oval opening for the hose. I have an older benchtop unit.

Mine is very simple with magnetic brush holders. The brushes are available in several lengths and with mounting strips, the 4" suction pipe direct to grizzly 2hp 1 micron canister collector is very efficient. The only time I get any dust is when working on thick material where the brushes leave contact with the material and table around the perimeter of part, but that can usually be solved by placing similar thickness material around perimeter of work, I suspect that would be true of any dust shoe..

And obviously you can't see the bit cutting, trust!

While it it may be hard for you to duplicate, my dust shoe meets both of those requirements.
Height adjustable and a section is removable for easy access to the bits.
My vacuum is fed from the top of the white boxes and comes down on both sides, outside of the routers.
