I thought that I'd have a go at making a branding iron for my products just to see what it would look like.
I'm not settled on the design, as i say mucking about at the moment. My wife is not to keen on it she thinks its old fashioned.
I must say, the setup for machining was not very rigid. So made of brass, used a 60 deg engraving bit.
regards
Brian

Thanks for posting!
I've been thinking about that, but haven't got to "Mucking" yet:)
I noticed you used a a small diameter engraving bit, and was wondering what you used for a pass depth?
Also wondering what you used for a heat source?
I had thought about using a 30degree, because mine would be smaller and thinking the 30 with a deeper flat depth would keep the heat from the thermal mass further from the wood.
I LIKE the design

Re: Just mucking about
Hi Scott
I total depth was 2mm and i cut it in 0.5mm increments. looking back now and seeing how deep it burns in, maybe 1mm may do or as you have suggested maybe deeper.
There is an awful lot of thermal mass in my brass base so that needs to be smaller. I used a 60 deg tool because i had one with a damaged tip as i didn't know if my feed was going to handle it (and the setup, there was a lot of vibration).
A thing to get right is being able to get a nice flat burn, as you see in one of the practice ones below.
Mmmm, a lot more development I think. I heated it with a propane blow torch.
Cheers

Re: Just mucking about
Thanks Brian,
Yep, I was thinking of something like my chisel mortiser or a drill press rig, combined with a big electric soldering Iron I have for control.
Bought a nice chunk of free cutting brass, and just never got a round tuit.
Make sure you keep posting your mucking around:)

Since I am not married to your wife, I think it looks good. . . .
But if MY wife said it looked old fashioned, well then, who am I to argue? LOL.
