Free Project - Telephone Clock

Post by AmritpalP »

This elegant and fun novelty clock is based upon the antique Model 50AL candlestick phone introduced in 1919 - the first free-standing tabletop dial telephone. Thus, began the era of rotary dial telephone sets which would span most of the 20th century...

Michael Tyler's latest project features segmented construction for the handset and mouthpiece assemblies. Aspire’s two-rail sweep modeling tool was used to create these pieces and produce a great looking simulation of an antique candlestick telephone!

The finished dimensions of this project are approximately 5.6 " W x 5.4 " D x 12 " T.
Note: This free Vectric project requires Aspire 8.5 higher.

Stan Kern posted a nice video documentary when he made his own Candlestick Telephone Clock project out of Black Walnut. I'm sure you'll enjoy watching it!

Here is the link to his video:

Why can't this project be done in VCarve Pro 8.5 also (aside from the file format)? I'm not seeing anything that VCP can't do.

It's made using the two rail sweep which VCarve doesn't have. The finished 3D pieces could be imported and cut in VCP but it couldn't be made from scratch in VCP. The projects alternate between Aspire only and VCarve/Aspire and August is an Aspire only month.

VCarve does not have the 2 rail sweep, but it does have the molding toolpath in version 8. Couldn't that have been used? The wedges could be cut using multiple parallel vectors with sloped fluting tool paths.

Possibly but it's still an Aspire only month so the project would be in Aspire format only. The free projects are, as far as I'm aware, a marketing tool so it makes sense to push the premier product as much as possible. They're always in the very latest version as well even when it's a chargeable upgrade I assume for the same reason.

I am attempting to do project this with VC Desktop, on my Piranha FX. Not all the great curves and edges, but the "feel" is there.
btw... the wedge was cut with the fluting toolpath and a 1/4" endmill. Minor grooves that sanded out easily.

I will post pictures of the finished product (soon).
Currently staining the parts.

Thanks,

Phil

Finally finished.
This was done on a Pirahna FX with VC Desktop, and a little lathe time.
The wood is White Oak, with a Red Oak stain, then 2 coats of Poly.
The Clock piece was from Hobby Lobby.

Sorry for the fuzzy pictures.

I should note, this was a fun project, and a little nostalgic.
My Grandfather had an original Candlestick phone, which he converted to a lamp, when you lifted the hand piece, the light would come on, hang up and the light went out ;)
