painting HDU edges

Hello all. I have made a few signs from HDU but my question is when and how do you paint the edge. I prime and paint the HDU with the base color. Then I put on paint mask. V carve the sign. Then paint the letters or v carving. I then prime and paint the cut edges. The problem is I get a paint ridge around the corner of the sign. How do you paint the edges of your hdu signs.
