Stacking Text

Post by Tex_Lawrence »

In a post from April 7, 2015, "Fleming" described a method of producing "Text on Text" carvings. He documented his process in a file called "TEXT ON TEXT Vcarving.pdf" and included an image file demonstrating the process. (LINK: http://forum.vectric.com/viewtopic.php? ... 92#p158004 )

Keep in mind that I'm a beginner at all CNC work, and I don't even have a machine yet. Having said that, I am getting good at using the trial software by creating or duplicating the work of others. I learn from challenging myself.

So, I am old, and I have many talents. One of them is documentation caused by a side career in programming. I challenged myself to improve on what "Fleming" has done, with the result included here.

There's no reason for me to provide the V-Carve file, because I'm using the trial edition. It only works on my computer.

You can eliminate the complexity of determining an offset for VCarving the lower layer of text. Just set the starting depth for the VCarve toolpath for the lower layer at the same start depth as was used for the top text.

Mike, that was actually the way I was creating stacked text (without the offset) when I had a problem with the look of a font choice. I went looking for a solution and stumbled upon "Fleming's" solution. The offset made it look much better. So, I guess font choice enters into the equation, too.

Actually, I think you could play with the offset number a bit and adjust the way the two text layers interact.

Here's a sample of a toolpath with the offset to the TextBottom weld.

Here's a sample of a toolpath without the offset to the TextBottom weld as FixitMike suggests.

I value your input, Mike. Thanks!

If you had set the start depth for the bottom text to be the same as the start depth of the top text (usually 0 for both) then the bottom text cut would not have cut into the top text. Please read my comment again.

Mike, I read every word of your comment several times. The second image was implemented with a toolpath (different than the first image) where the start depth was zero for both the top and bottom text.

Would you post the .crv file for the second picture? Then I can see for myself and be convinced.

I'm afraid I don't understand how a second VCarve toolpath using the same bit along an identical vector using the same start depth will cut into the first toolpath cut.

I'm using the trial version of V-Carve Pro, but I'll go back and double check everything.

EDIT: Thinking about what you said about "same vector." Actually the second toolpath is running on a welded vector of the bottom text and the top text.

Yikes, Mike's got a good eye!

The second photo above labled "... toolpath without the offset ..." was done with a 30 degree v-bit instead of the 60 degree v-bit used on the other one.

Here's the corrected image:

Here's a sample of a toolpath without the offset to the TextBottom weld as FixitMike suggests.

Now you can modify your instructions to include the simplified method. A set of clear instructions is always useful.

"Same vector" Although it is not really the same vector, in the area of question, it follows an identical path. Probably more accurate to use the term "identical vector path".

Thanks, Mike. I'm working on the remake right now, but am looking for the producer. Seems to be absent ... minded at the moment. More later. :D

I've revised the tutorial document. Please download this final document and discard the document in post #1. (The forum settings won't let me edit the post.)

Tex-Lawrence,

Your pdf is excellent help for learning the technique of Text on Text.
This process seems to confuse a lot of people and your lesson will help many of them. Keep up the good work. :)
