Candle Holders: A Twisted Pair

Well, I finally got a chance to finish the candle holders. They were carved out of Myrtle wood using the Carvewright Rotary Jig and have tapered opposing twists. The patterns were created using Aspire 8.

They look great, kind of makes me wish I had a 4th axis but unfortunately that's never going to happen with my machine unless it undergoes some major surgery

this Candle Holders look really very exquisite. I have a Chinese rotary and i have tried using it but its not even rounding a piece of material. Is it that it is not compatible with Aspire or it it something that i need to do?

Kindly Help, would love to do this kind of projects.

Jane you would be better starting a new post to ask your question rather than tag it onto someones gallery pictures, it's unlikely that your rotary axis is not compatible with Aspire, more likely you have it set up incorrectly or are not using the software correctly. Start a new post & I am sure someone will help.

Sorry for not responding sooner. I checked this thread for 3 or 4 days after I posted pictures of the candle holders and, other than a thank you, there wasn't much to respond to. When I discovered Vectric posted them in their newsletter I returned here to see if there were more responses.

Subsequently, I carved another set in Cherry. They really are tapered but the angle in the pictures doesn't show it very well.

Actually there is very little sanding and finishing if they are carved at the maximum quality setting. There is a 3/4" hole drilled all the way through from end to end on a 3" by 3" by 12" blank first. The most difficult part of the project is drilling a straight hole. It's hard to find blanks larger than 3" square so there isn't much wiggle room. Then a 2" plug is glued in each end so it can be mounted on the rotary jig or indexer. If your jig or indexer is large enough you could turn a jam chuck for both ends and then plug the holes after carving. Using this method a 3/4" hole doesn't have to be drilled in the top end for the candle. Just set the plug a little deeper.
