Aspire Camp Rotary Topics

Post by IslaWW »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday May 19th will be rotary day at Jim McGrew's upcoming Aspire Camp. Michael Mezalick and I will be presenting the information for the rotary axis.

I would like to ask those that own, wish to own or wish to build a rotary axis for topic suggestions. This is not to say we don't have material as much as we wish to ensure we haven't overlooked the obvious. These topic requests are not not limited to those that plan to attend. We are looking for both design and operational topics.

So, if you have a type of project that has proven to be problematic for you, or wish for clarification on something covered in one of the tutorial videos, or just wondered if a certain kind of project could be accomplished on a rotary axis, please add a request to this thread.

Hopefully we will have the majority of requests covered, but along with the presentations that we will give live, we are looking to develop a series of how-to classes and possibly short videos on those items that are not covered by Vectric Tutorial material.

I would like to see how you find exact center.

Paul...
Are you looking for hardware or software setups? Perhaps both?

Don...
This is covered in the presentation, are you going to attend?

I don't know if this is too obscure but spiral wrapping and 3D can occasionally produce previews that don't match the finished product. Also, drilled holes in a wrapped preview can exhibit some distortion in the preview that is not present in the finished product.

Randall,
I do have a short presentation about this effect....and a few ways to correct it....
I did come up with a workaround but it's not an exact formula for all situations...
But I think it's worth showing to get people thinking about using the rotary more.
Thanks for the question.

I'm interested in building a rotary axis and would love to hear any guidance or recommendations along those lines.

Van, I think Gary can answer almost any question on this topic...

Van and Paul...
I will be explaining all the components of a rotary, along with reduction ratios and why, step resolution and why for those that may wish to build their own. This also applies to current rotary owners of generic, shop made or OEM products to help them understand limitations caused by blank diameter, reduction etc. Physically you should be able to have plenty of info to make informed build decisions regarding hardware.

On the software side I know that a good number of control software brands will be covered, hopefully all. We are attempting to entice OEM support from the brick and mortar companies, but cannot speak to what level of info will be available for Mach or Linux, as they seem to be user supported. But I am sure they will be well represented. I may not be able to offer setup info for them, but I am sure someone in the room will be able to assist.
