For this month's project Michael Tyler has created an easy to make Spoon Rest project with a twist. This Vectric version features a hinged frame that swings up and over the bowl area to provide a built-in spoon handle support! Swing back over for compact storage. The slight angle of the handle support will help to keep drips from your spoons where they belong, in the spoon rest and off your counter top.
Note:
This free Vectric project requires Aspire 8.0/ VCarve 8.0 or higher.
Closed dimensions (approx): 4.875 " W x 5.25 " L x 1 " T
Open dimensions (approx): 4.875 " W x 8.875 " L x 1 " T

If you make your own version of this project, then it would be great to see a photo of your finished piece over on the Vectric Forum. Alternatively feel free to email us a picture of your finished piece at online@vectric.com.

Re: Free Project - Hinged Wooden Spoon Rest
I am afraid this was just a technical glitch at our end. Hopefully now it should be fixed and you can access the file, apologies for the inconvenience.
You will need to make sure to refresh the project page when you go back to it by hitting CTRL + F5 on your keyboard to overwrite the one in your browsers cache.
Thanks,
James

Re: Free Project - Hinged Wooden Spoon Rest
Make something, post it and it morphs.... Aspire/v-carve pro makes it really easy and fast.
Thanks to Michael for the ideas
Spoon holder modified by using offsets and a 1/8" brass pin for the hinge. [pin ends rounded-over with a hammer]
After doing the offsets I flipped the outer 'ring' about a line [vector drawn at hinge pin point] and moved it below the spoon holder.
1/8" hole drilled thru both parts at the same time using double sided tape [between parts] and painters tape [top and bottom]
Hole in center portion then drilled 1/64" over size.
Finish is Tung oil
Same tool paths for pocket and inside radius.
Made using northern red oak. When making thin parts pay attention to end grain in potential weak spots. In this case the end of the part that holds the spoon handle which is only 1/4" thick. First photo shows the flat-saw diagonal grain which multiplies the strength of the wood. Drilling straight holes using inexpensive machinist tools from Harbor Freight and wood shims [plywood under end of spoon holder].
NOTE: tape was removed for these photos. Dale
