Monograms

These are gorgeous and something I really want to do. I am brand-new to Cnc and everything about it. Would you care to post your toolpath and what type of bit that you used? I can create the monogram and welding just not sure what material thickness or tool to use or size it needs to be to get the best product. Thanks, Robin

Robin, I use .375" (3/8 Inch) thick HDF fiber-board. Makes a lot of dust while cutting,
On some monograms I used a .250" end mill, others with lots of detail I used a .125" end mill.
Using the .250 em three pass at .125" each.
Using the .125 em you best use lighter pass, I did mine at .060" per pass

To get what I think is a better looking piece, I always change the text into vectors, and do a lot of node editing. Trying to make all the curves as smooth as I can, and to delete as many node as possible.

Don't you want to cut Outside the vectors instead of On them?

Oh my goodness:-) That fixed the entire problem. Ran this so many times and didn't even notice that! Thank you so much!! Can't wait to try it on my machine. I've only done my test cut so far because they forgot to send the software with my 'bot' so trying to get several things created so I can cut when I get the official software! Thanks again!

Last name (surname) is middle initial. If it is the monogram for a couple, you would put the man's first initial first (of course...), then the surname initial and then the first initial of the woman.

I can understand that (sort of, except the gender order) however we both start with L so the order is not important but what if a single person does not have a middle name, how would you do that?

Guess you would do it the same way you would monogram an article of clothing - two equal size initials, or just one initial of the surname...but I am not an etiquette authority.

what if a single person does not have a middle name, how would you do that?

How about using an "X"? Northern Michigan University has a building named after John X Jamrich. He doesn't have a middle name so they just gave him an X!!

I made a couple of monograms and loved them but finding with additional ones they are 'breaking' when I cut them. I use a 1/16 em but some of those letters are pretty fancy. Plus I was making some of them 8 inches which isn't much. The pine I tried (3/4 inch) chipped out. Then tried some maple-not much better. is there a better 'wood' and a best tried thickness someone wants to share?

The ones i had success with I did use an onionskin and was happy with that. A little sanding on the back and that flew right off...easy peazy:-)
