Automatic Watch Winder / Display

Post by Tailmaker »

I started looking for a design of a watch display box for a birthday present and it ended up as a rather complex piece of equipment. Actually I had to do this twice, since the first version kind of worked but not smoothly enough. This second version seems to work very well. And.....of course all tool paths made with VcarvePro!

Wow. Your creation gets the prize for one of the weirdest and most wonderful works ever shown on this forum. It should be in a museum somewhere.

That's a pretty cool project!

Did you attach a motor with intermittent control to the centre gear?

just looked at your video, very cool. How did you find machining bamboo ply?, was it hard on the cutters?. I do love the invisible hinge, do you have any close up pictures of it?. Lovely job.

regards

No, not at all. That said, the natural straw yellow bamboo cuts much better (and is harder and less splintery) than the baked amber or brown bamboo material.
Supposedly it has some silica in it but I do not see much difference in bit life compared with e.g. maple or walnut.

I use an upcut bit, mostly 1/8" and sometimes 1/4" 2-flute with the usual hardwood feed and speed. Only for the gears I went down to 50 ipm and rather shallow cut to get the best precision out of my machine. For the gears a surface accuracy of better than 0.002" is critical. The upcut bit may leave occasional fibers on the top cut edge but they can be scraped off going along with the fingernail, leaving a perfect edge.
