Another Coat of Arms
Here's the latest commission.
It took nearly 10 hours to machine.
It's finished with 3 coats of Danish Oil (no sanding).
Cheers...

Nice work Alan. Coats of Arms are my favorite CNC projects. What kind of wood did you use? Mahogany?

Very nice work, both carving & finish!
I'm curious, did you create the design in Aspire?

Yep, all done in Aspire including a couple of traced bitmaps given a 3D depth using Aspire's modelling tools.

Looks really nice Alan.
It does resemble mahogany but the Sapele carved really clean. I tried a piece of African Mahogany once and was left with a lot of fuzzies.

Re: Another Coat of Arms
Do you find that consistently machines well Alan? I thought it was Sapele the Double Glazing firms use for finishing the inside of new windows, they say it's mahogany but I'm pretty sure it isn't. I pick bits out the unit next to mines skip & the density of it seems to vary enormously, some machines well some doesn't.Alan Male wrote:Not mahogany, it was Sapele
Nice work on the Coat of Arms by the way, sure customer is delighted.

Re: Another Coat of Arms
Hi Martin,
I guess I've been lucky so far.
I bought a 1" thick (as sawn) 6 foot plank from a local company that machines various mouldings.
This Coat of Arms was using my last piece, so if I get asked to make any more I may suffer your experience.
Cheers for the heads-up.

Re: Another Coat of Arms
Alan, maybe they are careful what they buy in if they are machining themselves. It's pretty easy to tell anyway by the weight & colour, the denser wood is darker in colour & obviously heavier. It all machines it's just that some of it needs some cleaning up after machining to get rid of the fuzzies.
Re: Another Coat of Arms
Hey Alan, beautiful piece.
You said total machine time was 10 hours or so.. Mind my asking what your charging? Reason is I have been asked to do one as well and I am lost as to what to quote them!
Thank you for your time!

Re: Another Coat of Arms
Hi Deric,
This coat of arms was for a friend, so the charge to him (£60) was more for my programming time.
However, there was a good discussion recently on the forum "What to charge for making stuff" it's well worth a read.
Hope it goes well for you.
Cheers - Alan
