Spring loaded tool

Post by Ms Wolffie »

I am saving up for this tool, it can do uneven surfaces up to 10mm (0.393"), great for natural and sloping surfaces :)

Looks easy for a machinist to make but I am not one :(
The manual shows all the important stuff for making one.

Most European Routers Have a 30mm neck that fits into brackets etc. but adapters are available, just not for large diameter routers/spindles.

The shiny neck is 30mm diameter and fits in the tool.

I came across this on another (non-CNC router software!) forum. Not cheap, but interesting.

Isn't .4 a tad more than .393 ?
I buy a few engraving cutters from that company and have mentioned them many times, they are great to deal with, but I guess shipping would be an issue for you.

Wolffie, can you lock the one you mentioned so it won't spring? as a fixed mount would be the most used ?
It looks very well made for the small rotary tools. And looks like it wouldn't waste Z-travel like the collet mounted one.

Glenn
I will test my rusty German once more.
I have bought my diamond tip from them and it works the same way as the one you mentioned.
Main problem is the German.
When I grew up I spoke it fluently but after so many years having English as my second language, I seem to have forgotten a lot :(

Hi again Glenn
Here is a UK seller who probably is better at explaining in English than I am

Hi Ms Wolffie,

That link kind of confirmed what I was thinking. It seems to me, the 30mm mount pictured turns your machine into a dedicated nose cone type engraving machine.
If your familiar with nose cone engraving, the adjustable nose cone rides against the work (under pressure) and the bit cuts at a depth controlled by the amount of preset adjustment. It seems a pain to change back and forth? (engraving to routing)

Hope that makes sense, English my only language and with a combination of bad grammar and punctuation, surprised anyone can understand :D

P.S. I'm not personally interested in the mount myself as it won't fit my equipment but the spring loaded engraving tool has possibilities although probably wouldn't use enough to justify the cost?

Good luck, what ever you decide.....
Glenn

Thank you Glenn.
I think I understand it this way:
When you use a spring loaded diamond bit the bit is static and used for low tolerance engraving.
This tool sits on the router and can be used for normal cutting up to a depth of 10 mm and a rotating bit whilst allowing an uneven surface.

I sent a question to the UK link and they told me"we use these in our manufacturing facility.
Why remove the spring? The cut depth is controlled by the plastic cone on the front of the head, the spring maintains constant pressure when engraving over a distorted work piece!"
I guess that answers my question :)
Cheers

Yes it can. You do not have to remove the tool holder to do normal carving, you just tighten a screw.

Now that I have worked it out I cannot wait to start using it

Ms Wolffie,

Really looks good, glad it locks and as long as the collet nut sticks down to the bottom part of the mount, it doesn't look like you'll lose any cut depth.
Good stuff!
Hope you enjoy :)
