3 Layer Owl Carving

Post by Cfellows49 »

I turned the machine on and off but I have to give credit for this project’s success to my wife who did the painting (the picture makes it look darker than it is). This is a purchased .stl file scaled into three 0.75 inch slices. Conveniently the Owl sits mainly on slice 2 and removes any concern over little islands needing to be individually attached. While the appearance is I carved it into a log, each layer began as a piece of 0.75 finished lumber. The bark design hides the layer edges well.

Very cool Charlie. Am I to understand that this was plain lumber then you textured the bark and inner wood grain into the slices. If so...WELL DONE!!! Looks awesome!

Fooled me! My first thought was how did you hold a round miss-shaped log on your table as you cut it..Beautiful finish and work...joe

Very cool...I couldn't tell it wasn't a solid carving! Do you mind sharing where you purchased the STL file? I might like to try this or see if they have other similar offerings.

Thanks for the kind words.

We are experimenting with clear coats. This model used MinWax satin polyurethane varnish. I turned out slightly more gloss than I would have liked.

In fact, loved it so much I bought it, even though I only tried 3D one morning last December. Still don't understand it all the way(couldn't remember how to import my database for instance), but like it so much I HAD to try today :)
Going to give it to Dad for Christmas I just decided!
Thank you very much for posting the link to the file. Wish I could paint a 10'th as good as you. Dad's going to have to live with an oil finish:)
Thanks again!! (Except for making me skip supper and keeping me up past my bed time :) )

Ok, so I bought one of the STL files.
Now I am in trouble.
How do I know how many layers there are and how do I separate/slice them?

That is the sort of thing I would love to be able to create, unfortunately I don't think my finishing skills will ever be up to standard.

Wollfie, if you get any official looking people at the door don't answer it
