Loggerhead Sea Turtle Hatching

Post by dldecker »

I bought a glass top metal table table at a thrift store, the space in the center of the table was about 17 inches round.
I decided to make some thing to fill the empty space.

I took Aspire's Scallop Shell.crv3d made it 17 inches and it was 1.0871 inch deep. I wanted it to be deeper, about 5.5 inches deep so I made a component of the out line of the shell 4.25 inches deep. Finished ended up to be 5.6191 deep. I glued up two pieces of 3/4 mdf for each of the three sections. It took about 6.15 hours to cut with a .375 ball nose. I cut the center part of what would be the top two pieces out to create a hole. Glued it all together. Sanded, sanded and sanded some more

I found a Loggerhead Sea Turtle for 3d printing at http://www.thingiverse.com/ made by 4MULE8, adapted it to cut on the cnc. I ended up making 17 of them 3 inches long out of some green corian I had laying around.

Bought a few ping pong balls to use as eggs, some sand blasting sand and went to work. Started laying everything out. Put a layer of glue then layered sand several times to build up a base. Glued the eggs, turtles and a few small shells I picked up at the beach to make it realistic

Thanks Guys, it was fun figuring out how to get things to work out. In your head things work better than they do in real life, but it all ends well.

This is fantastic! This should be showcased in the next Vectric Newsletter and place in their website gallery. You should also post over on CamHeads too.
