Advice on Water Cooled Spindles

Post by LonePine »

Hi,

I have a water cooled spindle on my CNC machine. Its relatively new. The manual for the spindle was 1 sheet of paper. It was written in chinese.
  • Do I need to worry about rust?
How do I keep algae from growing in the water?
If I am not going to use the Spindle for 8 Weeks should I drain?
Is there an additive that I need to put in the water?
Whats the deal?

Hi Lonepine,

Not to worry, its no big deal...

My cooling system is a 5 gal bucket with a submersible pump and lid to keep out trash.

I used distilled water with some food coloring so I can see it in the clear hoses....

No issues with rust or anything after 3 years, never changed or drained anything.

I have heard a touch of bleach in the water will stop anything from growing but I have not found it necessary.

Hope this helps....

My set up is similar to one already described, 25 ltr barrel which contains a submersible pond pump, I have however added anti freeze to the water which will do all the things you mention & you can see when the pump is working. Gets quite cold in Scotland during winter so will also stop the cooling system freezing.
If your buying a pump make sure you buy one with a suitable head, my barrel/container sits under the machine so the water needs to be pumped up hill :D

I was thinking regular auto type antfreeze - but I don't have any experience with water cooled spindles. Wish I did.
