Ever since I bought my CNC last winter, I wanted to upgrade the bed. I've been using 2 layers of 3/4 MDF. Had to route channels to put in T track so I could use hold downs on the work.

Bought some 3/4 X 3 80/20 aluminum extrusions. Took off the old bed, cut the new pieces to length. Then wanted to get everything as level as possible.

My father was a machinist, tool and die maker and then a CNC programmer. I have some of the tools he bought when he first started as an apprentice. Got to use them today. Found out that there is .004 difference between the high and low pieces so I need to get some shim stock tomorrow, .001, .002, . and 003 to get everything on the same plane.

Once that is done, I need to work on tramming. When I get that right then I need to determine if I'm losing steps.

There is always something to occupy the existing time available at the moment. I do CNC in the winter when it is too cold to ride. Spring, Summer and Fall are great times for traveling on my BMW R 1100 RT and now it's even better since I got the fastest color: Boston Green.

Impress indeed! The most significant problem keeping me from getting a full size CNC is unloading and placing it. That and not having a real good place to place one.

I only you lived on my (short) street. I would take you up on the garage offer if I had a key and it was in short walking distance. Of course anything I need cut on it would take priority. You could provide heating or cooling, the lights and power.

gene, that's a good question. right now i just have the dsp. its pretty nice. of course a little learning curve, but Jamie was a life saver for me. Jamie and i would love to pay a visit some time to your shop.

machine is awesome, the quality is amazing.
here is a simple video from today. looks like any other video, but this machine is smooth, fast, powerful, and stout.

go rob!!!! happy for you...put it to the test with solid woods, better test it with a 3d file around 100mm thick long run time 25 to 40 hrs...you get used to going to bed ck it every few hrs...it will perform beyond what you expected...

The "Green Monster" -

I've been working on a rebuild of my 5' x 12' machine since late July 2013 by building a new welded steel frame made with 3" x 3" x 3/16" steel tubing. The original steel frame was made of 1" x 2" x 1/8" steel tubing and was a bit too shaky to suit me. I finally breathed life into it again yesterday morning. It manually jogs at 1,000 IPM on X and Y axes and should achieve the 1,400 IPM jogs that it could do previously but I haven't tried it yet. That was a computer pulse rate limitation. I never run it anywhere near that during cut jobs. The stiffness of this frame should be much more acceptable. The machine is ~95% steel construction. A new Z axis upgrade will come later to handle a 3-1/4 hp Porter Cable 7518 router or a spindle.

The chartreuse and gloss black colors are automotive two part paints with some of the smaller parts painted from a spray can.
