Mantle
We’ve been commissioned to design and carve a 12ft. long x 12 in. tall mantle for a private hunting club.
Elegantly Rustic but not shabby.
Here’s the first sample. It's about 11" x 11" x 1-3/4"
The mantle will be cut from 1-3/4” sapele and lightly finished, and shading.
It will be attached to the existing mantle which is already 10 inches thick.
The depth of the cuttings will be about 1 inch, with a generous amount of undercutting
I have some very unique ideas on some areas that I think will push my limits .
Nothing like a good challenge.
For those that were at the Colorado workshop and got to see the drawings,,,yep,,this is it,,finally getting made.
More updates to come.

Wow, Michael - what a fun project to be commissioned to do! Can't wait to see the final product installed. The teaser sample looks wonderful!

Re: Mantle
About 1.5 for the rough and 6 for the finish..
Lots of deep z movement.

Re: Mantle
The depth of cut and shading make this a standout (is that a pun?)...nice work.

Re: Mantle
I am definitely interested in the finished product.
How do you plan to attach it to the existing mantle?
Was the piece that you will be cutting cut from the existing mantle?
I keep telling folks that i can do this but i have never done it so your ideas definitely interest me.

Re: Mantle
The original mantle is a very rough, split piece of pine.
They wanted something a bit more refined,,,, I will attach my piece with pegs, into the existing, after I cut off about 2" of the face.
I will still need to finish the bottom and the top surface but The top will have a very unique feature......
As for the Colorado workshop, it was in the beginning of August this past year at Tony Wish's place...
We had an annoucement here and on other forums...sorry you missed it,,,it was great.

Re: Mantle
Very cool project. Hopefully you will do a build log to help those of us who might someday try to tackle such a large project I know it is going to be fantastic.

Re: Mantle
Michael,
When you say 'generous amount of undercutting' does that mean you have a 5-Axis machine?

Re: Mantle
Yes, I was interested in how you plan to do the undercutting as well. By hand, or are you flipping it and doing 2-sided machining?

Re: Mantle
The undercutting is done with a Dremel..
It really makes the work "pop"
Also,,it is finished with clear shellac and I use orange shellac for tinting.
I'll keep you posted as the work progresses.
