Nice array of projects there, Tom. Any chance you can share the project requirements? I'll assume to carve something on the top. Just guessing from that one photo that they had to come up with a base design as well.

Very nice. So what is high school woodshop like nowadays? When I took it the most high tech machines that we had were planers, table saws and lathes. It must be hard to fit all the older basics and CNC also or is it primarily CNC in your shop?

Well thanks for the interest everyone,
Our woodshop classes are kind of unique. We start with the traditional intro to woodworking (boxes, stools, etc.) and then move to signs to intro our newer equipment. Laser engraver and then on to CNC.
Table is the end of the year project with the focus being the design, we start with plans, and then they can change the design if they like but not the proportions.
In order to complete the top we intro Illustrator to edit their image, then bring into Vcarve and finish the design and then carve it.
Been doing this project for 5 years now and the kids love it.
This course is a feeder for our CADD courses. We try to trick them into liking the technical path, it works for the most part. Our department services roughly 1200 students in some capacity every year.

Tom,
Wish I had all that when I was going to school.

What will matter is not what you bought but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave

1200 a year, that's amazing. I was going to say, " if they knew how lucky they were" but then thought about it and in 10 or 15 years they will be thinking the same thing about the future students.
I wish we had this when I took shop. Heck we didn't even know what computers were. Maybe you should set up some sort of after school tutoring deal.....not for the students but for them to tutor us!
