Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
Does anybody know where I can purchase a CNC model for "carving" a scooped style chair seat. I would need it to work with machinist 3d or v carve pro.

Here is a link to a thread talking about that kind of seat. I can do it in Aspire, but don't know what you need for v-carve or 3D machinist.

You making a chair like this? I've made several of these. I am slowly modelling all the parts for this rocker. I have the armrests done, which was the hardest part. The seat was actually quite simple if you have Aspire. All I have left to model is the back legs, which are difficult because the joint is tapered (which makes the joint hard to do on the CNC).

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
Yes that is the style of seat I want to do but I am going to use it in other styles of chairs and rockers. Although I do eventually want to do these Maloof style as well. I do not have Aspire yet. I use Vector Art 3D Machinist to adjust the size and set the tool paths as well as create the G-Code when I am using VectorArt 3D models. Right now that is what I am limited to.
Thanks for the link.

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
I am unfamiliar with machinist 3D - what type of model file would you need? Would you be able to take a generic seat model and resize it to fit the seats you are making?

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
Here is a seat sample I posted on another thread, with the file. Hopefully someone is able to convert this to a format you can use with machinist 3D.
The ledge on the front of the seat was just to keep my round bit from plunging too deep when cutting. The seat portion is fairly generic and could be resized to fit any style of seat.

Beautiful rocker, Russell. I am slowly modeling a Maloof style low back chair, but I want to try some dry runs before using expensive walnut. Are you doing machining on top and bottom of the legs/arms?rscrawford wrote:Here is a link to a thread talking about that kind of seat. Every part is cut top and bottom. I just use index holes to position the work for 2 sided cutting.
Here are the arms fresh off the machine, showing top and bottom views.

I have the trial version of Aspire and I am trying to run your seat. Can you email me a 3d dxf?

The Aspire file is in one of the above posts. Just click on it to download.
Downloaded 83 times already? Has anyone cut this out? You can resize to any dimension, and change the outer profile to any shape you want.
I'm just finishing up a set of 8 cherry dining chairs, using a seat model very similar to that one.

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
I downloaded it but am physically unable to make it for a while, due to an argument with my table saw, it tried to amputate my thumb.

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
Here is one cut out and assembled. This is pretty much the same seat as the one in that file.

Re: Scooped chair seat - Maloof style
Nice chairs, Russell. And I have to admit it, those joints are tight and awesome (the older I get, the wierder are the things that are exciting... )
