Free 3D Machining Software +

Post by Tony Mac »

Further to Brian's note about theFree Vector Art 3D-Machinist software.

The images below show files from VA3D-M loaded and previewed in a
prototype version of VCW 3. This new functionality allows the 3D toolpaths
to be imported and positioned with vector designs, which makes a great
solution for machining designs that include vcarved, 2D and 3D toolpaths.

PhotoVCarve files can also be imported and positioned in the new version
of VCW3, making it much easier to carve more interesting designs.
For example, the PhotoVCarve picture designs can now be placed inside a
decorative picture frame, previewed and all the toolpaths saved from the
one place. Minimising the chance of making mistakes when setting up the
job on the machine.

Can anyone spot the other new functionality that's being shown in one of
the screen shots?

We will post more details about the new functionality planned for VCW 3
in the next couple of weeks.

I'm have to agree with Paco with the addition of the roundover tooling, I almost posted that on the wish list. Maybe the Wizards are mindreaders now?? And along with the icons for the Isometric and Planer view that Chuck mentioned looks to be a icon to zoom all (possible toggle back and forth), along with the machined text on the framed eagle that Dan pointed out... I'm excited about the ablity to add the text from VCW

Adding text from within would be a great time saver as well.
This is a anniversary picture I did a couple of weeks ago for my wife.
I had to cut it again due to not sealing a second time before the second layer of stain.
She liked it alot.....gotta keep her happy :)

Hi Chuck,

I guess you added the PhotoVCarve detail to the VCW design using something like PhotoShop?

The new import option makes it very easy to place the toolpaths for a picture anywhere in the
2D design view. Multiple designs can be imported, interactively positoned and mirrored with a
greyscale representation being updated in the 2D view so you can see exactly where the picture
is relative to any vector decoration / text etc.

This is great for combining individual designs to make family portraits with the faces all looking in
the right direction.

V Carve Pro?

Didn't catch that before..... :D
I keep clicking on the tools on the jpeg but nothing happens

On a side note...
one major flaw with this software is productivity, or lack thereof...
I have so much fun playing with the preview that i don't get up off my butt and cut something.
Everytime i create a toolpath I end up going back in and changing something to "see what that will do"
I need something like subliminal messages flashing on the preview window telling me that I must produce :D
With this new stuff you guys are coming up with, my success at being productive is gonna go way south....

but seriously, Brian, Tony...excellent work!....have ya gone public yet?...I would be interested in a few shares :D

What 3d file formats will VCW3 support. I'm looking forward to it's release.

Hello Bert,

VCW3 will only import files saved from the Vector Art 3D Machinist software that include the calculated toolpaths. VCW3 does NOT calculate 3D toolpaths, but imports theses from VA3D-M so they can be positioned relative to other design elements such as text and vcarved features. All toolpaths can then be previewed and saved in VCW3.

Hope this helps,
Tony

VCW3 will also import Photo Vee Carve files if I'm not mistaken.
