the wood

Post by tjstamp »

just started to get involved in this and i am just using some red oak that i had to see what happens. the designs come out great but what is a better kind of wood to use? seems like red oak has a lot of air pockets. i guess its called less dense. need a tighter grain. any suggestions. thanks, tom.

The woods mentioned are great but I find myself going back to Red Alder a lot. Cuts great and takes a great finish.

Truth is most of us will cut almost anything that doesn't move. We might have our favorites, but we get over it if something better shows up in the shop or we haven't had our fix of dust and carving for the day.

Yep - I cut just about anything that does not move.

I do like Cherry.

Just remember, it's the art, not the material that people appreciate
