Vector Art 3D model type A
The model type A is a raised carving that can be cut out and used as an applique. If you do not have any other software other than 3D machinist and are downloading the individual models, is there a way to surface the board to make it a one piece carving with the model raised higher than the new "top" of the board? Something like what this person did?

It is NOT possible to carve the model above the top of the wood. That would be adding material.
What you are seeing - is all the material removed around the model.
The top of the model WAS the top of the material.

Hi Dan,
You can't do that in 3D Machinist alone, but it could be done if you also had Cut2D or VCarve Pro. You would import the 3D toolpaths from Machinist and then use Cut2D or VCP to calculate a pocket toolpath around the 3D shape.
Do you have Cut2D or VCarve Pro?
Tim

Tim - Thanks this is what I was looking for.
Leo - Thanks but I realize you can't add wood, I wanted to know how that carving would be accomplished. Tim's answer was what I was thinking I would have to do but really wasn't sure.

These designs, where the surrounding material is carved away from the subject, are referred to as "Standing Proud", and are favorites of mine. The capability to do them was one of the primary reasons that I eventually upgraded to Aspire.
