Foam bits

Post by asignco »

I've been cutting 2d materials for several years and I've just started 3d cutting. I have several bits but in routing my first 3d project today using foam, I was wondering if someone could tell me whether single or double flutes is better for 3d foam? Plus everything I read is using a ball nose bits. All my bits are reg end mill. Does ball nose always produce a smoother result?
I realize most people use wood for 3d projects. As soon as I get more experience, I'll move to that too.

Thanks for any help -mark

Mark,
I have found that some of my flat end bits are not square and will leave a bit of a trail. Ball nose seems to be the better choice.

i use a tapered ball nose for all of my 3d, 90 percent of time i use a .125

try to use hdu if you can, especially for outdoors. its cost will outweigh the worry of wood losing its finish.
with practice, you can get some good results of making hdu look like wood.
