Sorry grease didn't answer your question .. I have seen some nice lithos that were cut with 60 degree. I have used 45 degrees but prefer the 30 I think better resolution ...

Yes Kent,
that 30 degree is much better although, they both look great.
Will have to order a 30 º one.

Re: How I make Oval lithophanes
Hey guys...
Well, I think I have it figured out...
It all came back to me.
Thanks, Kent, for the .21 tip.
That really helps with the contrast and all.
The ones attached are done with a .125 Ball for roughing 35% stepover
and a .03125 Ball for finish. (cone bit). 15% stepover
Can't wait to get my 30degree bits.
(broke my other).
But, I think these turned out quite well!
I have a litho cutting as I type.
A very interesting one, which I will post, when it is done.
I don't think it has ever been done before.
(if it works)
Stay tuned......

Re: How I make Oval lithophanes
I've broken a (relatively) expensive .031" bit. On the other hand, I bought a set of 10 Chinese needle-tip bits on Ebay for $10 a few years ago and they've held up great. After doing a lithophane in corian (15+ hours) I can still use the bit for further work. I think I've actually only broken one, still have half unused.

Re: How I make Oval lithophanes
3 yr's 5 months later I am still using original bits. Yes tip broke but still smaller then the 0.03 I tell software it is . If I had to guess I would say each bit has 200+ hours on each . when shaving 0.003 in corian doesn't wear the bit at all that I can tell...I am sure it does.
and in fairness to the manufacture of my bits they all broke when plunging 0.21 inches first cut. I run aggressive Z

I can tell the bit I've been using is dulled a bit, but I still wouldn't touch the tip carelessly with a finger. I'll second those aggressive cuts. I go .21 in corian, and there's no preliminary rough cut. I learned everything I know about lithophanes on this forum.

My 2 cents worth.
Look for Tapered Ball Nose Cutters they are good were no rough cut is used.
