question about dark hair in carvings

Post by famsearch »

here we go again kids! finally got one to work out pretty good. used a 3/32" diameter ball nose, and a very shallow cut, and slow speed.

it took 11 1/2 hrs. to cut. the material was some birch that i had laying about the shop.

the girl in the photo has black hair, and it looked pretty good in the preview, but after being carved, the hair was cut much deeper than
the surrounding area, including the face. is there something that can be done, short of airbrushing the hair color to light gray, or white,
in order to raise the carving of the hair to equal or just above the layer of the face?

other than that, everything else came out ok.

Hi; The program does what it does, works great for lithophanes and half tone lines. As a true representation of a photo, not so much. You could in the right photo shop program change the hair color etc. to try to get the correct heights but that is more work than I want. Stay shallow and view the work from several feet away and it looks good. Norm

Don't know that it would help but changing the contrast will result in more variation in the cut depth.

When cutting an image in wood rather than a lithophane where you use a negative image, and if you have photoshop, change the hair to white or a light color then it will be raised rather than undercut. Dale
