Did you shellac several times before staining ? It looks like possibly the stain may have penetrated fairly deep and you had to sand to much off to see the contrast. The first several I did, I did not seal with shellac first and only stained them and mine came out looking very much like yours. Another thing I have done is in stead of using stain I use a very fast drying spray paint and apply that after the shellac process. What percentage line spacing are you using and what angle cutter ?

Actually it looks like you off to a pretty good start and only need some tweaking on the finishing process.

I am enclose a picture of the second one I did that came out fairly well but there were 3 before this one that were horribly bad. You can see where I sanded off to much in some areas because I did not seal it first and only used stain,You can also see where the stain bleed in so deep ( if you zoom in) that it removed the contrast.
I also did a lot of photo editing in Gimp to get these results. The quality of the original picture was from a low meg pixel camera and things like his nose were not in the picture, so I actually darken his nose and goatee in Gimp so they would show.

I just looked at the last 2 pictures you posted, and the suggestions I have been giving you do not really apply to the type of picture in the last 2. I think that there are some threads on here that can help you immensely though. This thread in the gallery section ( 4 one down ) has what you need.

These are my pictures in wood

Thank for feedback. All pictures are of same thing just different setting bits and stain color. I like the smooth look I can make but want the detail I get in the one that shows lines.. On the dark one I used a spray sealer that didnt do as good as the brush type. Have two more change I want to try before I go back to the one with lines in it to try and make them smaller.

The clock is one I used a fast drying paint on after I put shellac on it and I like that finish a lot. I also did one of my grand daughters I did where I used a black stove hand rubbed finish on it, but I had a problem with it bleeding in to the wood grain even after shellacking.
So far I am the happiest with a fast drying spray paint.

wipe it on let it sit and wipe it off
Don't let it sit.

Wipe on-Wipe off.

You can always do it again if it needs to be darker.

I am not an expert on PVC :(
To me it looks good but why oh why did you cut the top off the poor baby's head?
Make sure you get the complete photo and leave a space around, otherwise the end result looks wrong.
Be careful with the figure in the wood, it can make or break a picture.
The less figure the better.
Cheers
